Curtis Park-Five Points
District
|
The
Curtis Park - Five Points district was one of Denver's first
residential neighborhoods, and features some of Denver's oldest homes and
historic storefronts.
Along
Welton Street is "Five Points," the historic center of Denver's
African-American community, with the name coming from the 5-way
intersection formed at Welton, 27th Street, E. 26th Avenue, and Washington
Street. Farther north, primarily between Stout and Arapahoe, are
dozens of blocks of some of the oldest and most beautiful Victorian homes
in Denver, along with Curtis Park itself, the city's oldest official park.
The
district experienced significant decline after World
War II, with many historic properties falling into disrepair, economic and social distress, and surface parking lots and
incompatible commercial developments encroaching from Downtown. Fortunately, like the rest of Denver's Center City
districts,
the Curtis Park - Five Points area is now witnessing remarkable revitalization. New residential projects and building renovations are taking place
throughout the district.
