Three
quarters of this
block is doing great, particularly with three of Downtown Denver's most
beautiful historic buildings: the Masonic Building, the Kittredge Building,
and the Paramount Theater. But in December 1995, the old Kenmark
Hotel, a
5-story building that, admittedly, was in very poor condition, was
demolished. Unfortunately, no building has taken its place since, and
with surface parking not a use by right in the core area of
Downtown, the site isn't used as a parking lot either. It's a weedy,
gravel lot, in the heart of the Financial District, the Wall
Street of the Rockies. More than a decade has passed and it remains a gaping
hole in the otherwise exceptional urban canyon that is 17th Street. |
