This block
offers a mix of historic and modern buildings in a manner that leaves the
block not without some character but, due to the surface parking lot that
cuts across the entire width of the block, lacking in a sense of
cohesiveness and place. Anchoring the block at the corner of E. 17th
and Sherman is the attractive and historic Central Presbyterian Church; at
the corner at 17th and Grant is the eclectic George Schleier Mansion; and at
the corner of 16th and Sherman is the stately Old Capitol Life Insurance
Building, built in 1924. All three of these buildings are on the
National Register. Finally, at 16th and Grant is the plainly modern
12-story Capitol Center.
