This block
is essentially built out, with the exception of just one small parking lot
along Lawrence Street. This block is home to Sakura Square, a
full-block development built in 1972 for the Japanese community in Denver.
Sakura Square features a 20-story residential high-rise, the Denver Buddhist
Temple, the Pacific Mercantile grocery, several restaurants and shops, and a
Japanese garden. The Square also features a monument to former Colorado
Governor Ralph Carr who was one of the few U.S. leaders during WWII to
publicly oppose the internment of Japanese Americans. Sakura Square
also annually hosts the Denver Cherry Blossom Festival. |
